Latin Grammys: Yalil Guerra wins for contemporary classical work

Yalil Guerra, a Havana-born contemporary composer who for some years has made his home in Los Angeles, has won this year’s trophy for best classical contemporary composition for his work “Seduccion” at the 13th Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas.

Guerra’s piece, which is performed by pianist Elizabeth Rebozo, is from his album “Live in L.A.”

Guerra, who was a child prodigy, is the son of the well-known Cuban singing duo Rosell y Cary, whom Guerra thanked in his acceptance speech. He studied classical guitar with a number of famous instructors, including one master who is an emeritus professor at Cal State Northridge.

Guerra has written works for mixed choir, for various classical ensembles and for string orchestra and Cuban percussion. In addition to his prolific classical output, he also has written music for the Univision Spanish-language network and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
