Academy to make Oscar nomination announcements sooner

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that it is moving ahead the Oscar nomination day from Jan. 15 to Jan. 10 to provide its members and public a longer time to view the nominated films. The Academy Awards will take place on Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre and air live on ABC.
Because of the date change, there may be some scrambling by the Directors Guild of America, Cinema Audio Society and American Cinema Editors. All three of those groups had previously selected Jan. 10 as the nomination date for their awards.
The academy also announced that for the first time its members can vote electronically thanks to an electronic voting process it has been developing together with PricewaterhouseCoopers and Everyone Counts.

Dec. 1: Governors Awards presentation
Dec. 17: Nomination voting begins
Jan. 3: Nomination voting ends
Feb. 4: Nominees luncheon
Feb. 8: Final voting begins
Feb. 9: Scientific and technical awards presentation
Feb. 19: Final voting ends at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
