Quick Takes: ‘Dancing’ premiere slides

Could “Dancing With the Stars” be losing its luster? Monday’s premiere of the long-running ABC competition series was down 32% from last year, despite months of heavy promotion and an “all-star” cast including Bristol Palin and Pamela Anderson.

The dance show also finished well behind NBC’s “The Voice” in key demographics, but the news for “Dancing” wasn’t all bad: The show drew 14.6 million viewers, versus 11.9 million for “The Voice,” easily making it Monday’s top entertainment draw.

It was also a good night for NBC’s freshman entry “Revolution.” Coming off a strong debut last week, the J.J. Abrams-produced post-apocalyptic drama attracted an estimated 9.3 million viewers Monday night, retaining 85% of the audience from the previous week. It was also the leader among the coveted 18-49 age group in its 10 p.m. slot.

DNA test over Hemsley claim

A Texas judge has ordered DNA testing on a man who claims to be the brother of the late “The Jeffersons” star Sherman Hemsley.

Richard Thornton is challenging the validity of Hemsley’s will, which names the actor’s longtime manager, Flora Enchinton of El Paso, as sole beneficiary. Hemsley died of lung cancer July 24.

Judge Patricia Chew rescheduled the El Paso trial on Hemsley’s estate to begin Oct. 31. Thornton must provide the DNA testing results by Oct. 15.

REDCAT names director-curator

REDCAT has named a new gallery director and curator to oversee its visual arts program. Ruth Estevez will take on the job starting in November at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, located at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown L.A.

Estevez will fill the role formerly held by Clara Kim, who left REDCAT in 2011 to join the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Since Kim’s departure, associate gallery curator Aram Moshayedi has been the acting director.

REDCAT is a contemporary arts space that is a division of the California Institute of the Arts. The space programs theater, music, dance and visual art exhibitions.

Estevez served as chief curator of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Carrillo Gil in Mexico from 2007 to 2011.

Latin Grammy noms announced

Juan Luis Guerra, the Dominican Republic’s biggest music star, leads the 13th Latin Grammy Award nominations with six, including record and song of the year nods for his hit “En el Cielo No Hay Hospital” (There Is No Hospital in Heaven).

Duo Jesse & Joy are right behind Guerra with five nominations, while seven acts received four nominations apiece, partially as a result of the Latin Grammys’ expansion this year of its four general categories — album, record, song and new artist — to include 10 nominations apiece.

Artists with four nominations each are Juanes, Ricardo Arjona, Edgar Barrera, Carla Morrison, Arturo Sandoval, Ivete Sangalo and Caetano Veloso. Veloso also has been named the Latin Recording Academy’s 2012 Person of the Year.

Awards will be handed out Nov. 15 in a ceremony to be telecast by Univision from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

A new memoir by Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson has proved to be one of America’s most prolific songwriters. Turns out he’s no slouch when it comes to memoirs, either: He has a new one due in November.

Nelson will release “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” on Nov. 13. Publisher William Morrow says the American music icon will tell never-before-heard stories about his life, family, music, politics, Texas, religion and favorite recreational activity.

Nelson’s first autobiography was published in 1988.

‘Beasts’ director plans new movie

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” director Benh Zeitlin is working on his next film: a Louisiana-made fable about a hidden ecosystem where the aging process is “out of whack” and people can age quickly or very slowly.

Zeitlin’s first film, “Beasts,” took awards at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals this year.

Zeitlin said he would like to use the same production team and cast in the new, yet-to-be-titled project.

Renewed: NBC has ordered a fourth and fifth cycle of its reality-competition series “The Voice” for spring and fall 2013.

Streisand: Just a week removed from announcing a performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Nov. 9, Barbra Streisand is adding a second performance on Nov. 11. The first show has sold out; tickets for the second go on sale Monday at 10 a.m.
