SAG Awards 2013: Navid Negahban on ‘Homeland’ and the ‘cry face’

Navid Negahban walked the red carpet at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards looking much cleaner and slicker than how we’ve seen him on the past two seasons of “Homeland,” where he plays terrorist Abu Nazir. It is a look he credits to his publicist and to Hugo Boss.
Describing how life has changed since he took on the role, Negahban said with a laugh: “I’ve been stopped at La Guardia several times. I have to explain that I only play a terrorist on television.
“But playing this role really wakes you up; you look at situations differently, and you definitely gain a deeper understand of it all.”

The second season of the Showtime series has been criticized for its exaggerated antics and for taking situations too far to be considered realistic — case in point: Carrie’s sporadic and dramatic crying.
“She’s very good at it, and it’s certainly not that easy,” Negahban said.
Do the actors demand Claire Danes provide them coaching on the side on how to achieve this famed “cry face”?
“Unfortunately,” he said, “it’s one secret she’s not willing to tell.”
