DreamWorks Animation ranked 12th best company to work for in U.S.

Hollywood studios aren’t known as easy places to work. But DreamWorks Animation once again has made Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 best employers.

The Glendale studio behind the “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Madagascar” movies ranked 12th in the 2013 list, just above Quicken Loans (which ranked 13th) and semiconductor company Qualcomm (11th). Google once again was ranked No. 1.

DreamWorks, with 2,350 employees, was the only Hollywood studio to make the list, which will be released Thursday. Compiled in conjunction with the Great Places to Work Institute, the survey is based on employee surveys and takes into account perks and job growth, among other factors.

“We are incredibly proud to be named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list, for the fifth consecutive year,” said Dan Satterthwaite, DreamWorks’ head of human resources. “We see this recognition as a validation of how and why DreamWorks Animation continues to attract talent from around the world, making us a top employer in Los Angeles, in California, and in the U.S.”

DreamWorks Animation has made Fortune’s list for the last five years, moving up from 47th in 2009 to its highest ranking of sixth in 2010. Last year, the studio placed 14th.

With employees from nearly 40 countries, DreamWorks prides itself on having a collegial, artist-friendly atmosphere. Perks include a full-time doctor’s office, free meals for all employees, game rooms and a college campus style environment with waterfalls and koi ponds. The studio offers classes on everything from yoga to sculpture as well as an art show that enables employees to express themselves freely in ways not permitted in their everyday work.
