SAG Awards 2013: Who will get a nomination?

The Screen Actors Guild, the Hollywood union that is one of the trustiest early predictors of the coming Oscar season, will announce the nominees for its awards Wednesday morning.

SAG’s prize for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture -- chosen by 2,100 nominating voters -- often forecasts the Academy Awards’ best picture race.

Leading contenders this year are expected to be the casts of “Les Miserables,” “Lincoln,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”

(Another possible best picture Oscar nominee, the independently produced “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” is ineligible for the SAG Awards because it wasn’t shot under the terms of the union’s low-budget feature agreement.)

The SAG Awards are a significant Oscar bellwether because actors are the largest single voting bloc within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Last season, four of SAG’s five ensemble nominees went on to earn best picture Oscar nominations -- “The Help,” “The Artist,” “The Descendants” and “Midnight in Paris,” although SAG ultimately chose “The Help” as the year’s top film and the academy chose “The Artist.”

Besides outstanding cast, SAG will nominate performers for awards in film categories including lead actor and actress, and supporting actor and actress. SAG will also be nominating performers for TV awards.
