Joni Gordon, who directed the Los Angeles art gallery Newspace for more than 30 years, has died. Gordon died Sept. 11 in Bend, Ore., at the age of 75.
A gallery neophyte when she began her tenure at Newspace, Gordon would eventually become a prominent figure in L.A.’s contemporary art scene. She purchased the gallery on Melrose Avenue in 1975 and served as its director until 2006, when she decided to close the space.
The Hollywood gallery, located near Paramount Studios, represented such artists as Betty Parsons, Judy Fiskin, Robert Cumming, Martha Alf, Jeff Price and Christopher Georgesco.
Former Times arts reporter Suzanne Muchnic covered the closing of Newspace in a 2006 profile.
