Stocks open slightly lower in early trading on Wall Street

U.S. stock indexes opened slightly lower on Wall Street as the federal government reported that new unemployment claims held steady last week.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 17 points, or 0.1%, to 12,582.

The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index was down 2.2 points, or 0.2%, to 1,323.

The technology-focused Nasdaq was 7.3 points lower, or 0.2%, to 2,867.

In Europe, where Greece continued to struggle to form a government, major indexes were down about 1%.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported 370,000 initial jobless claims last week, unchanged from the previous week.
