A quiet day on Wall Street is ending with major stock indexes little changed after a big rally the day before.
Stock indexes jumped more than 3% Thursday after European leaders unveiled a plan to expand their regional bailout fund. Optimism ebbed on Friday as analysts raised questions about the plan, which left out many key details about how the fund would work.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed with a gain of 23 points, or 0.2%, at 12,231. The S&P; 500 rose less than a point to 1,285. The Nasdaq composite fell 1, or 0.1%, to 2,737.
Declining stocks narrowly outnumbered rising ones on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was slightly below average at 4.4 billion shares.
