San Diego man can steal a car, but he cannot tell a lie

Talk about an open-and-shut case.

Two Los Angeles police officers were stopped at a light near Olympic Boulevard and Broadway about noon Monday when a motorist pulled alongside them, rolled down his window and made a startling admission.

“Officer, I just stole this car,” the man told the incredulous cops.

The officers pulled the car over and questioned Christian Borro, 27. He told them he had stolen the 2000 Honda Civic from an apartment complex in San Diego using a screwdriver to bypass the ignition.

So why did he confess after driving all the way to Los Angeles?

LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon said Borro, a Miramar College student, worried he was about to run out of gas in the middle of the road and would be caught one way or another.

The officers quickly realized how lucky they were to have made the collar. The owner had not yet reported the Civic stolen, so there was no record of the theft. As they took Borro into custody, the officers discovered he was still on probation for an earlier car theft.

“Don’t try to make sense of it. If crooks really thought their crimes through, they wouldn’t do them in the first place,” Vernon said.
