Chelsea Thomas pitched a complete game and retired the side in order after giving up a seventh-inning home run to lead Missouri to a 2-1 upset of second-seeded UCLA in the first game of an NCAA super regional Saturday night at Easton Stadium.
UCLA’s Dani Yudin gave the Bruins hope with a home run leading off the seventh, but Thomas got the next three batters on a strikeout, groundout and lineout.
UCLA (44-10) must win twice today to advance to the Women’s College World Series at Oklahoma City. The teams play at 12:30 p.m. and will force a second game later this afternoon should UCLA win the first one.
Missouri (49-9) scored in the second inning Saturday when Andee Allen doubled in pinch-runner Michaele Vock. Earlier in the inning, Micaela Minner led off with a single.
The Tigers made it 2-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Gina Schneider.
UCLA junior Megan Langenfeld went the distance but fell to 16-2. The Bruins stranded seven runners.
