Souls lost to the horror

Re “Tortured by the past,” Opinion, April 27
Many of us Vietnam veterans are experiencing reactions like Frank Snepp’s to what has been going on in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo. Participating in or witnessing the purposeful infliction of pain and death on others is a life-changing experience that never goes away.
We all cope in different ways. Some of us came back as super-patriots defending all excesses, and some came back as activists opposing all war -- but the politics don’t matter now.
Some of us are still on the streets after 40 years because our souls were lost to the horror. The past comes back to haunt us when we see the kids today going through it again.
The best cure is to speak out. Welcome home, Frank, and thank you for your service.
