The inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president will
long be remembered for the multitudes who went to Washington. They filled the National Mall for the swearing-in ceremony, chanting, cheering and waving flags, and later lined Pennsylvania Avenue for the inaugural parade. Sisters embraced, the new president paused to greet a friend, a young man wept for joy -- private moments in a public, patriotic spectacle.
