CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / LONG BEACH

A small plane crashed Monday afternoon during takeoff from Long Beach Airport, officials said.
About 1:30 p.m., the single-engine Cessna veered off the left side of the runway, struck a helicopter and a hangar and caught fire, officials said.
The plane was flown by a student pilot -- the only person aboard the aircraft, said a spokeswoman for Temco Sky Network Service Inc., which owns the plane. The pilot suffered minor cuts and bruises, she said.
Federal Aviation Administration inspectors were on the scene.
