Strike kills militants in Pakistan

Times Wire Services

A missile strike apparently carried out by one or more U.S. drones flattened a home in the South Waziristan region near the Afghan border, killing local and foreign militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said today.

Sources did not agree on the number of dead, but it appeared to be at least 20, with several others wounded.

Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its fight against terrorism, but it has opposed missile strikes in the country’s tribal regions where Taliban and Al Qaeda insurgents are believed to operate.

The strike came only two days after Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said the drones are flown from a base in Pakistan.

A Taliban official said most of the dead were “Uzbek mujahedin,” though the intelligence officials did not give such a description.
