Cheerleading coach is sentenced in sex case

The owner of a now-closed cheerleading school in Oxnard was sentenced this week to three years in prison for having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student and providing her with the drug Ecstasy.
Jonathon Rios, 28, who pleaded guilty shortly after his November arrest, was also ordered to be placed on parole for three years after his release.
Rios was sentenced Thursday by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Bruce Clark, who denied the defense’s request for probation.
As part of his plea agreement, Rios will not have to register as a sex offender but must inform prospective employers of his conviction.
The defendant was accused of having sexual relations with the teen more than a dozen times from July to October 2006, with the use of Ecstasy on two occasions.
Rios’ former business, Club Cheer Twisters in Oxnard, closed earlier this year. His wife, who helped operate the club, has filed for divorce, according to Rios’ attorney.
