Child Killed, Woman Hurt in 1-Car Crash

A 6-year-old girl was killed and a woman was seriously injured when they were thrown from a van Thursday on the Santa Monica Freeway, authorities said.
The woman, described as being in her 20s, was driving the van in the eastbound lanes near the Crenshaw Boulevard exit about 12:20 p.m. when she lost control. The van hit an embankment and flipped over.
The child died at the scene.
The woman was transported to California Hospital Medical Center in downtown with major injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.
