Injury Drops Haworth to Sixth

ATHENS — An aggravated elbow injury cost America’s Cheryl Haworth any chance of a repeat bronze medal at super-heavyweight in the women’s weightlifting competition Saturday.
China’s Tang Gonghong won the division with a world-record total of 672 pounds.
South Korea’s Jang Mi Ran took the silver and Poland’s Agata Wrobel won the bronze.
Haworth, from Savannah, Ga., tweaked her surgically rebuilt left elbow on her successful first attempt in the snatch, then sat out two lifts before settling for sixth place.
Greek star Pyrros Dimas, trying to become the first weightlifter to win in four consecutive Olympics, won a bronze. Georgia’s George Asanidze won the gold.
