Upshaw cancels L.A. appearance

Soprano Dawn Upshaw, who has been suffering from fall allergies, has been forced to cancel a scheduled appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Nov. 22.
Upshaw was to have sung a new work, “Correspondences,” written for her by French composer Henri Dutilleux. The work will be sung instead by Canadian soprano Valdine Anderson.
Upshaw’s allergic symptoms began on a flight to Australia following the world premiere of “Correspondences” in Berlin in late September. She was also forced to cancel the New York premiere of the Osvaldo Golijov opera “Ainadamar,” which was to have opened at the Brooklyn Academy on Tuesday night.
According to a Philharmonic spokesperson, Upshaw will need several more weeks to recover, but that should not threaten the L.A. premiere of “Ainadamar,” which is scheduled for Feb. 29 in Disney Hall.
