Though we are veterans of most of the major parks, we thoroughly enjoyed Lassen Volcanic National Park for its easy accessibility and lack of casual tourists. Only an hour out of Redding, Calif., yet just enough off the beaten path to avoid the tour buses, it lacks the lodges and dining facilities of most of the other parks. With great hiking and several lakes for paddling, it’s surprising it isn’t better known.
