President-Elect Moves Against Foes After Vote

Azerbaijan’s newly elected president, Ilham Aliyev, moved to silence critics as police arrested three opposition leaders and vowed to prosecute organizers of deadly protests against the vote result.
Aliyev’s supporters and police blamed the unrest on the opposition, especially the Musavat party led by presidential runner-up Isa Gambar, who was arrested for inciting violence, sources close to his party said.
On Aliyev’s TV channel, pictures of injured soldiers and protesters smashing cars were set to Carl Orff’s rousing “Carmina Burana.” Gambar was depicted with a red X across his face, with the words “Say no to fascism.”
