Chief Vows to Probe Officer-Involved Death

Community leaders and San Diego’s police chief appealed for calm after police cars were pelted by rocks and bottles near the spot where an officer fatally shot a wanted parolee.
Chief Bill Lansdowne promised a “thorough and complete investigation” into the fatal officer-involved shooting, the first since he took over the department in August.
Billy Venable, 26, was shot Saturday after police stopped the driver of a car in which he was a passenger for a traffic violation. Police Capt. Mike McCulloch said Venable fought with Officers James Hunter, 31, and Christopher Leahy, 23, and tried to remove Leahy’s service weapon from its holster.
