VANCOUVER AT DETROIT, THURSDAY
Two early division leaders, Vancouver in the Northwest and Detroit in the Central, and two of the league’s best. The Canucks toyed with Calgary and Edmonton, and the Red Wings were tested by the Kings (a victory with 1.7 seconds left) and Ottawa (a 3-2 overtime victory). Both can open it up and play a skating game, but the Red Wings are probably better defensively. Each has a likely Norris Trophy candidate, Detroit in Nicklas Lidstrom and Vancouver in Ed Jovanovski. Detroit’s Steve Yzerman and Vancouver’s Trevor Linden are veterans who have major influence on the ice and in the locker room.
