Workers began installing 2-ton concrete barriers intended to stop immigrant smugglers who have taken to driving the wrong way on Interstate 8 to avoid a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.
The barriers, each 12 feet long and 3 feet high, were being placed Wednesday on the Interstate 8 median near the checkpoint, about 40 miles east of San Diego.
The 3-mile line of barriers should be completed in the next week or so, said Tom Nipper, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
