Indians Sue Artist Over Sale of Recordings

The Tuolumne Band of Mewuk Indians is suing an American Indian artist for copyright infringement, invasion of privacy and other allegations over the sale of recordings of Mewuk tribal ceremonies.
Such ceremonies “are never intended to be performed for profit nor allowed to be exploited for personal gain,” says the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Fresno.
The suit charges that Lorenzo Baca, a Tuolumne County artist, has been selling recordings of music and dance ceremonies performed in May 1992 at the Tuolumne County Museum.
