From Times Wire Reports
About a sixth of the world’s population, nearly 1 billion people, live in slums, a number that could double by 2030 without serious attention, the U.N. Human Settlements Program reported.
Asia has the largest number of slum dwellers, with 554 million, and sub-Saharan Africa has the largest percentage of its urban population in slums, about 71%. Almost half the world’s urban population lives in slums.
The report describes slums as poor, overcrowded areas lacking basic services or clean water.
