Housing starts up in California

California August housing starts, as measured by the number of building permits issued statewide, rose 11.1% from July and 10.5% from August 2002, according to the monthly survey by the Construction Industry Research Board. Single-family starts rose 7.4% from July and 7.8% from August 2002.
Total housing starts for the year will reach 186,800 new homes and apartments, the largest number since 1989.
