Reasons to declare that fruit

Perhaps David DeKok [“The Apple of Customs’ Eye,” Letters, Nov. 23] fails to realize that the introduction of an alien insect or worm in agricultural or animal products may devastate an entire industry in a flash. He got off easy because every traveler returning from overseas is advised to declare the possession of any agricultural or meat product in the customs declaration form. Instead of bemoaning the loss of an apple, he should take this opportunity to learn a lesson in civic duty.
