Anti-Drug Campaign Killings to Be Probed

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra established committees to investigate complaints surrounding a month-old government anti-drug campaign, which has led to hundreds of deaths. Police say about 500 people have been killed, and government officials say the toll could be twice that.
Human rights groups have accused police of a “shoot-to-kill” policy or of arranging the slayings. But authorities say most of the killings have been carried out by drug gangs, and police say some were the result of officers’ shooting in self-defense.
