Conservatives Form Coalition Government

Backed by Joerg Haider’s anti-immigrant Freedom Party, a conservative-led coalition assumed power in Austria. It’s the second attempt by Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel’s People’s Party to lead Austria with the far-right Freedom Party.
Their previous ruling coalition collapsed in September after an internal struggle within the Freedom Party. Haider has no official role in the government now but remains a dominating force behind the scenes.
