Woman Abandons Her Newborn Son at Hospital
- Share via
Methodist Hospital officials said a woman brought her newborn baby to the emergency room Monday, telling the staff she couldn’t take care of him.
The baby was the third to be legally abandoned in Sacramento since a safe haven law took effect in January 2001. The law tries to prevent newborns from being abandoned where they can die of exposure or starvation. Since the law took effect, 28 babies have been legally left at safe havens in California, said Blanca Castro of the state Department of Social Services.
Parents can leave newborns 72 hours and younger at hospitals with no questions asked and without fear of prosecution.
