Lea Salonga, the original “Miss Saigon” in London and New York, has had less luck with “Flower Drum Song,” a revival of the 1958 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that brought her back to Broadway in October.
The $8-million production will close March 16 at the Virginia Theatre after a disappointing five-month run of 172 performances. Salonga stars in the show, which had its pre-Broadway debut at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in 2001.
“Flower Drum Song” is the second Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to announce its closing on Broadway recently. A lavish revival of “Oklahoma!” ended an 11-month run Sunday.
