Re “City Council Adopts Resolution Opposing U.S. Invasion of Iraq,” Feb. 22: The crime rate goes up, the potholes grow deeper and the Los Angeles City Council preserves its Hollywood image -- that of the Keystone Kops. Why is it that the council fails to come to grips with the negative facts that surround us and goes off on an international bent that is far removed from what we need and well beyond the members’ ability to comprehend?

Not content with its inability to keep Los Angeles streets safe and the city efficient, our council has now taken over global responsibilities. What is next, the universe? What a joke. Thank God for term limits.

In my 37 years in Los Angeles, I’ve never been as proud of the city as I was on Friday, on account of the City Council’s vote against the Iraq war.
We in Los Angeles do so many things badly -- grossly underfunding schools, libraries, medical care and homeless shelters, just for a start -- that it’s heartening to know we’ve done right on something that’s very important.
