Nations Pledge $50.7 Million to Afghans

Donor nations at an aid conference in Tokyo said they would allocate $50.7 million to help Afghan President Hamid Karzai tighten control over his war-torn and divided nation.
A commitment of $3.5 million from Britain hadn’t been announced previously, but the rest had been pledged beforehand. Japan pledged $35 million, the U.S. will give $10 million and Canada offered $2.2 million.
At a Tokyo conference in January 2002, donors promised $4.5 billion over several years; $1.8 billion has been sent.
