From Staff and Wire Reports
An outbreak of whooping cough is spreading in Davis and shows no signs of slowing, Yolo County health officials said.
As of Tuesday, county epidemiologists had identified 172 cases of pertussis. The disease, commonly known as whooping cough, is characterized by coughing spasms followed by a high-pitched intake of breath.
All but 12 of the cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection were diagnosed in Davis. Officials said cases have been found in nearly every public school and at UC Davis.
