It took six years and 15 tries for Wake Forest to finally beat Duke -- and then it took two overtimes.
Vytas Danelius scored 20 points and matched a career high with 14 rebounds as the Demon Deacons ended a 14-game losing streak to the Blue Devils with a 94-80 victory Thursday night at Winston-Salem, N.C.
The victory kept the 15th-ranked Demon Deacons (17-3, 7-2) in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a half-game ahead of 16th-ranked Maryland.
The eighth-ranked Blue Devils (16-4, 6-4) lost their fourth straight ACC road game for the first time since 1996, shooting 31.5% from the field.
Danelius scored all five of Wake Forest’s points in the first overtime and four in the second extra session to help the Demon Deacons beat Duke for the first time since January 1997 -- when Tim Duncan was a senior.
Eight players fouled out in a game that saw 64 fouls called. Trent Strickland, one of the freshest players left on the court, scored 10 points in the second overtime and Jamaal Levy added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Chris Duhon led Duke with a career-high 23 points, but he missed his first six shots of the second overtime as Wake Forest outscored the Blue Devils, 20-6.
Dahntay Jones, Duke’s leading scorer, was 0 for 12 from the field and finished with 10 points in 45 minutes.
No. 25 Saint Joseph’s 78, Temple 59 -- Delonte West scored a career-high 32 points and Pat Carroll got all of his career-best 24 on three-point baskets to lead the Hawks (18-3, 8-2 Atlantic 10) at Philadelphia. Saint Joseph’s broke open the game with a 10-0 run in the second half.
Alex Wesby scored 20 points and Maurice Collins added 15 for the Owls (7-13, 5-5), who had won four of five.
