Connecticut Gets Scare but Pushes Streak to 61

Diana Taurasi scored 22 points to help No. 1 Connecticut hold off No. 23 Boston College, 83-75, Saturday for its 61st consecutive win.

Barbara Turner had 18 points and nine rebounds for Connecticut (22-0, 9-0 Big East) before fouling out in the final minute at Boston. She scored seven points in the last 10:06 as the Huskies, who led by as many as 16 in the first half, were too much for the Eagles.

Connecticut improved to 22-0 overall and 9-0 in the Big East Conference.

Becky Gottstein’s 19 points and eight rebounds led Boston College (15-6, 7-3).

Connecticut’s streak is now the second-best in NCAA basketball history. The UCLA men’s team won 88 in a row from 1971 to ’74.

The Huskies led, 61-52, with 8:15 left before the Eagles scored nine consecutive points to tie the score with 5:10 left.

But Taurasi converted a three-point play and Ashley Battle scored on a steal and breakaway to restore Connecticut’s cushion.

No. 5 Kansas State 65, Baylor 53 -- Kendra Wecker had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Nicole Ohlde had 18 points to lead the Wildcats (21-2, 8-1) over the Bears (15-6, 4-5) in a Big 12 Conference game at Waco, Texas.

Baylor led, 43-42, when Jessika Stratton converted both ends of a one-and-one free-throw try. But Ohlde scored a layup and Wecker had eight points during a 12-6 run that put the Wildcats ahead, 55-48, with 2:48 left.

No. 6 Stanford 71, Oregon State 46 -- Nicole Powell had 24 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead the Cardinal (19-2, 11-1) over the Beavers (12-10, 6-7) in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Palo Alto. It was Stanford’s 23rd consecutive victory at home.

No. 9 Louisiana Tech 66, San Jose State 59 -- Trina Frierson tipped in a missed free throw in the final 30 seconds and Cheryl Ford had 17 points to lead the Lady Techsters (19-2, 11-0) over the Spartans (8-12, 4-7) in a Western Athletic Conference game at San Jose. It was Louisiana Tech’s 17th consecutive victory.

No. 11 Texas 89, Kansas 47 -- Heather Schreiber scored 14 points to lead the Longhorns (15-5, 8-1) over the Jayhawks (9-12, 2-8) in a Big 12 game at Austin, Texas, and give Texas its 17th consecutive home victory.

No. 19 UC Santa Barbara 70, Idaho 58 -- Kristen Mann scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures and the Gauchos (17-3, 10-1) defeated the Vandals (6-14, 4-6) in a Big West Conference game at Moscow, Idaho.

Arizona State 62, No. 20 Washington 56 -- Carrie Buckner scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half to help the Sun Devils (17-5, 9-4) rally for the Pac-10 victory over the Huskies (14-8, 6-7) at Tempe, Ariz.

No. 21 Wisconsin Green Bay 76, Detroit 52 -- Kristy Loiselle scored 20 points to lead the Phoenix (19-3, 10-1) over the Titans (7-14, 5-5) in a Horizon League game at Detroit.

No. 22 Villanova 71, Syracuse 44 -- Katie Davis scored 23 points and the Wildcats (17-4, 7-3) made 16 three-pointers to defeat the Orangemen (8-13, 3-7) in a Big East game at Syracuse, N.Y.
