Aged Nuns’ Social Security Restored

PITTSBURGH — Twenty-one elderly nuns at the School Sisters of St. Francis order will be restored the Social Security benefits the government had denied them because they took a vow of poverty.
The Social Security Administration said the nuns’ benefits were wrongly calculated under a 1978 regulation, said Sister Mary Traupman, an attorney for the nuns.
The agency refused to comment Friday. The 21 nuns, ranging in age from 75 to 95, live in a nursing home near Pittsburgh.
