Officials Criticize State Quota on New Homes

Linda Wheaton, head of the policy division of the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development, heard complaints from county officials during a meeting of the local Council of Governments.
The locals insisted it was inconceivable for San Luis Obispo County to meet the state’s demand for at least 18,900 new homes by 2008. The Council of Governments, as it did with the higher number in January, voted Wednesday to reject the latest figure.
The local proposal is 10,360, which some of the elected officials still consider unrealistic.
