Walter Goodman, 74; Former N.Y. Times Reporter, TV Critic

Walter Goodman, 74, a former television critic and reporter for the New York Times who also wrote a well-received book on the Communist hunts of the 1950s, died Wednesday of kidney failure at a hospital in Valhalla, N.Y.
Born in the Bronx, Goodman graduated with a journalism degree from Syracuse University and held a variety of editing and writing jobs for publications such as the New Republic and Playboy before joining the New York Times.
As a television critic, Goodman focused on news programs and documentaries.
In the late 1960s, he wrote “The Committee: The Extraordinary Career of the House Committee on Un-American Activities.”
