Wake Up and Smell the Greenhouse Gases

Kenneth Green is worried about commandeering consumer choice (Commentary, July 5). Assemblywoman Fran Pavley’s (D-Agoura Hills) bill, AB 1058, is concerned about regulating tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Green says that climate change is “largely theoretical.” Does that mean we shouldn’t be concerned?
The United Nations-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that the Earth’s average temperature could rise by as much as 10.4 degrees in this century. The last decade was the warmest on record for the last 140 years. Burning fossil fuels contributes to the problem. When some consumers insist on driving behemoth vehicles that burn two to three times as much gas as other cars, regulation is in order. These shortsighted people aren’t just hurting themselves by exercising consumer choice. I hope Gov. Gray Davis signs this bill.
