Television producer Marcy Carsey and her family have donated $2.5 million to UC Santa Barbara to support construction of a media school.
The Center for Film, Television and New Media will be designed to teach and conduct research on mass media and culture, university officials said.
A total of $15 million in private funds is being sought for the project, which will include a 325-seat theater. Pending voter approval of a state bond that would also help pay for the center, construction is set to begin in 2005.
The Emmy Award-winning Carsey is best known for co-producing the sitcoms “Roseanne,” “The Cosby Show,” “3rd Rock From the Sun” and “That ‘70s Show.”
The gift is from the Carsey Family Foundation. The university said Carsey is a parent of two UCSB graduates.
