Lawyers for Condit’s Wife, Tabloid Wrangling

Lawyers for the wife of Rep. Gary Condit (D-Ceres) and the National Enquirer are wrangling about whether the tabloid legally can be called a “newspaper.”
The Enquirer wants Carolyn Condit’s pending $10-million libel case thrown out because she never demanded a retraction before suing. She filed suit in February, accusing the tabloid of libel for an Aug. 7 headline that stated she attacked Chandra Levy. State law gives papers a chance to correct mistakes by printing corrections or retractions before suits are filed.
