A Child’s Suffering Is Not Political Fodder

There is nothing humorous about a child’s suffering. On Aug. 6, two children underwent a 22-hour operation and one of them has undergone two subsequent procedures and remains in critical condition. My colleagues and I have cared for and prayed for these children daily. To see them portrayed in such a cruel and insensitive manner in Michael Ramirez’s political satire is truly intolerable (editorial cartoon, Aug. 18).
Ramirez carefully illustrated the intravenous lines and monitoring equipment of the intensive care unit; but what could he have been thinking when he drew elephant and donkey heads on the children’s bodies?
One of the children remains in the ICU quietly fighting for her life, while her parents pray at her bedside and hold her small hands. That is the real picture, Mr. Ramirez.
