* New this week: Tsai Ming-Liang has contributed to making Taiwanese cinema among the most venturesome and challenging in the world today. In his most recent release, “What Time Is It There?,” Tsai once again explores urban loneliness and isolation in an austere and demanding manner, but tempered more than ever before by dark, absurdist humor and a ray of hope at the finish. A young street vendor (Lee Kang-Sheng) falls in love with a pretty girl (Chen Shiang-Chyi) who’s off to a lonely Paris sojourn, and the vendor’s mother (Lu Yi-Ching) obsesses over her husband’s recent death. Features a homage to Francois Truffaut that includes an appearance by “The 400 Blows” star Jean-Pierre Leaud.
