After being jailed in Los Angeles for six months, the founder of a worldwide network of charities agreed Monday to be extradited to Denmark, where he has been charged with tax evasion and embezzling about $10 million from one of his nonprofit organizations.
Mogens Amdi Peterson, 63, leader of the Tvind organization, also known as Humana, could be returned to Denmark by the end of this week, said his Los Angeles lawyer, Robert L. Shapiro.
Shapiro had been prepared to contest Peterson’s extradition at a hearing scheduled to begin Monday in Los Angeles.
Over the weekend, however, Peterson changed his mind “against my advice,” Shapiro said. Peterson cited health problems and a desire to confront his critics in Denmark.
