Cuba Shuts Out U.S. to Win University Title

The U.S. national team lost to Cuba, 6-0, in the gold-medal game of the inaugural FISU World University Baseball Championships on Sunday in Messina, Italy.
Right-hander Orelvis Avila, named the games’ most valuable player, allowed only seven hits in the fourth consecutive shutout for Cuba (7-0).
Team USA finished 5-2. Among tournament award winners was Cal State Fullerton’s Shane Costa, who was named best left fielder.
Japan defeated Chinese Taipei, 5-0, in the bronze-medal game.
