Two Killed as Plane Crashes on Catalina

A twin-engine plane landed and skidded off the end of the Catalina Airport runway Friday and exploded, killing both people aboard.
The Beechcraft Baron may have been going too fast when it landed, ending up about 100 yards from the end of the runway, said Lt. Gary Olson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Avalon station.
“There’s very little solid pieces left of the plane,” he said.
The crash ignited a half-acre brush fire, which was quickly doused by airport workers and civilians, Fire Inspector Ed Osorio said.
The accident killed a 54-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman who were longtime companions, authorities said. Their names had not been released.
Olson said the two had flown from Arizona, and were from Cave Creek, outside Scottsdale.
