Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights joined Tiger Woods and Mike Brannon as the only 15-year-olds to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, beating Canada’s Richard Scott, 2 and 1, in the final match at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.
Liaw, who shot 58 in a Southern California junior tournament as a 12-year-old in 1998, is the third-youngest winner in the 54-year history of the tournament. Woods is the youngest champion, winning in 1991 at 15 years 6 months 21 days. Brannon won in 1971.
In the morning semifinals, Liaw beat Chanin Puntawong of Bradenton, Fla., 2 and 1, and Scott routed Andrew Dresser of Carrollton, Texas, 7 and 6.
Liaw and Scott received spots in the U.S. Amateur in Atlanta on Aug. 20-26.
