GAME OF THE WEEK

PITTSBURGH AT WASHINGTON

When--Thursday. Time--4 p.m. TV--ESPN2.

* Story line--The Penguins are trying to keep an Eastern Conference playoff spot, and the Capitals are trying to overtake top-seeded New Jersey. NHL scoring leader Jaromir Jagr suffered a bruised upper back when he was hit from behind by Philadelphia’s Dan McGillis Sunday--he’s lucky it wasn’t worse. His status is day to day. The Penguins’ 3-1 loss to the Flyers left them seventh in the East, two points ahead of Montreal. The Capitals are 29-8-6 since Dec. 27 and haven’t given up more than three goals in a game since Feb. 19. Chris Simon, no longer limited to being an enforcer, has a career-high 28 goals and goalie Olaf Kolzig ranks among the leaders in wins (38), shutouts (five) and save percentage (.918).
